According to the recent box office reports, Godzilla x Kong has greatly surpassed expectations with an estimated $545 million generated worldwide on a $135 million budget.– making this movie a box office success. It is the second most earning monsterverse movie sitting behind Kong: Skull Island released in 2017 which earned about $568 million. McKenna Kim, a massive fan of the Godzilla franchise as a whole, explained the draw of Godzilla x Kong. “For this movie, it is all about the monsters. the human plot line has started to become more irrelevant as that’s not what the people are there to see a Godzilla movie,” Kim said. “Sure we do have Godzilla: Minus One that goes in more depth with the human character plot line, but for the monsterverse, I am fine with seeing goofy monster fights and I still had a great time.”
Kim sees potential for monsterverse movies in the future. “I sure do really hope so. I feel like there’s still more story to tell in the monsterverse, especially more with Godzilla,” Kim said. “Since after seeing the film, it is very much more a Kong oriented movie than Godzilla which I am perfectly fine with. I would prefer to see more Godzilla and to see him have more depth as a character.”
In addition to more potential movies, discussions have started about the future of the monsterverse and the potential for further sequels and spin-offs. A second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters was announced — an Apple TV series going into the lore of the monsterverse along with more in depth human characters.
The director of Godzilla x Kong, Adam Wingard, has said there could be another Godzilla x Kong type movie, depending on the box office which it seems to be a success. So, the opportunity for creating another movie is in the air.
As the credits roll and the dust settles, one thing is clear: Godzilla x Kong left an undeniable mark on the cultural landscape, reigniting the flame of monster media for a new generation of fans. Whether you are team Godzilla, team Kong, or simply along for the ride, one thing is certain: the battle of the titans will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come.
