Noel Coward’s Present Laughter, directed by Angie Kells, is the MCC spring production at the Black Box Theatre.
Present Laughter is a happy-go-lucky comedy that celebrates the career and larger-than-life persona of playwright Noel Coward. Set in London, the play follows Garry Essendine, a famous actor who is greatly adored by his fans. However, this admiration leads to chaos in Garry’s household. As Garry prepares to embark on an African tour, he must navigate the attentions of an infatuated young woman, an obsessive young playwright, his best friend’s wife who is determined to seduce him, his manager, his secretary, his producer, and his estranged ex-wife all while his 40th birthday and an impending mid-life crisis creep closer.
Present Laughter opens Friday, March 8th and runs March 9th-10th, 15th-17th, and 22nd-24th. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7 p.m. and Sunday performances are at 2 p.m.
The cast includes Joel Bennett (McHenry), Skye Schoen (Johnsburg), Bobby Roberts, Emily Kunash, Paul Lockwood (Woodstock), Gianah Tomczah (Crystal Lake), Karen Christensen Peterson (Rolling Meadows), Stephen Pickering (Fox River Grove), Addie Keller (Harvard), and Brian Fleming (Chicago).
It is directed by Kells (Woodstock), with assistant director Chelsea Boesiger (McHenry), dialect coach Marisa Snook (Woodstock), set design by Eric Luchen (Chicago), lighting design by Deb Holmen (Crystal Lake), costume design by Carol Foreman (Cary), technical direction by Chris Adkins (Woodstock), scenic painting by Holly Adkins (Woodstock), stage management by Mailin Contreras (Woodstock), and produced by Jay Geller (Kildeer).
